Who are we? We find that we live on an insignificant planet circling a humdrum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people.

Pale Blue Dot

Everyone must hear Carl Sagan read "The Pale Blue Dot" at least once in their lives.

This narrow-angle image is the earth part of the portrait of our solar system taken by the plucky and venerable Voyager 1 on it's long and lonely journey (32 years and counting in deep space).

At first glance, it is hard to see anything of significance here but look again. On the upper left quadrant there is a point of pale blue light. Do you see it?

Look Carefully! Look! It's a photo of your home and mine.

From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different.

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us.

On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives....on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

This photo was taken when Voyager had moved just beyond Neptune. It's only a part of the entire picture of course - on the entire potrait, you probably couldn't even make it out (perspective) (portrait).

Enough background - the following is the best version of Pale Blue Dot I've found so far on youtube. Enjoy!
